Around 40 publishing members and guests gathered in Edinburgh on Tuesday 27 September to meet, discuss and share common issues of particular import to independent publishing companies. PPA Scotland hosted the event which included PPA members from Plymouth, Carlisle, St Albans and Grayshott, to Stirling, Dundee, Glasgow and Edinburgh.
Two excellent case studies were presented. Kevin McCormick from Wild Bunch Media introduced his recent launch into the world of independent publishing with two titles aimed at the fitness and running market for both men and women; then Paul McNamee, newly appointed Editor-in-chief of all five regional titles for The Big Issue talked us through the intricate and fascinating world of how The Big Issue operates.
Barry McIlheney, PPA’s Chief Executive provided an overview of key issues for the association that will be tackled in 2012; Terry Grimwood, Group Publishing Director of Signature Publishing then outlined the remit and role of the newly named Independent Publisher Network, IPN, formerly known as IPAC; Helenor Gilmour, PPA Scotland ’s Chairman and Head of Brand & Consumer Insight at DC Thomson, covered events and initiatives that will be the focus for members in Scotland.
A networking lunch was followed by a lively discussion on key topics of concern as well as an exchange of information and expertise, highlighting very clearly that small, niche independent magazine publishing is alive and well and thriving both north and south of the border.
